For the last several years, John McClung Roofing has had a soft spot for kids and schools in the community and we have executed several “Backpack Giveaways” to help students start their year off right. With the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, we wanted to help a little more than usual and so for 2025, we are planning to give away 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to kids in WNC for their upcoming school year!

John’s daughter, Darien (who works for the company and plans this event each year) also started a non-profit several years ago called Shared Vision. Before Helene, the non-profit solely focused their efforts on missionary needs overseas, but when the hurricane came, Shared Vision opened up a branch in WNC to help Asheville and surrounding areas. Shared Vision is partnering with John McClung Roofing this year to help make the Backpack Giveaway stronger than ever! Walmart heard about this endeavor and graciously gifted Shared Vision a $5,000 grant to help! And they gave it on the day of the grand opening of the East Asheville store, after re-building since the storm. We are so thankful to Walmart, Shared Vision, and other community partners who help make things like this possible!
